I have lived on the seacoast of New Hampshire for 40 years but I had never been on a whale watch. Everyone said "You have to go. Whales are the world's largest mammals, they come right up to the boat. You can almost touch them." It was my friend's birthday. She is smart so to impress her I decided to take her with her friend on a whale watch. It was dawn when we got to Hampton. I had taken dramamine. I had my sweater and a bag lunch. A whale biologist stood on a table and told us the history of whales. Then we got on the boat. We went out. The sea was lively. There were big waves. We went out some more. Then we stopped and waited. It was pleasant. I considered a nap. Someone yelled whale 3 o'clock and everyone rushed over. I rushed over too but I didn't see anything. A long time went by. My friend came over. She said that this was the worst whale watch she had ever been on. I said if we didn't see any whales we could get ice cream when it was over. But then I did see a whale. It was at 9 o'clock. It looked like a big wet eggplant. I waited to see the head. I was thinking of Jonah. We chased that whale up and down. People called out 2 o'clock, 5 o'clock. It was trying to get away from us. Then it was over. I was sunburned but I could go home. |
